Getting in the DIY Spirit

I was invited to a Masquerade Ball event for the first time ever and I know one of the requirements is to wear a mask.  I wanted something colorful and I went on a hunt to see if I could create something crafty but chic.  What I thought would be a great mask had me second guessing whether or not it would be a hit, so I went on Pinterest and did a search on DIY Masquerade Ball masks and found these easy steps to create my own.

The night before the event I realized I could follow these easy steps and produce something more “me”.  Now the question was, how can I get all the materials I need without going to the store (it’s Sunday evening and stores are closed) or rummaging through my storage (yep, that is closed too)?

The first thing I did was search Google images for traceable masks. I found 5 different cool shapes on a Shutterstock site, so instead of printing out each one I just folded my paper in 4 quadrants and traced the outline of one side of the mask from the computer screen (increase the size of the mask to your liking before tracing). Proud of my tracing skills with a pencil, I now had to figure out which style I was going to go with. I ended up selecting this:

Now this is a very fancy designed mask, but I just traced the outline.  The end result was amazing and you won’t believe what I used for pattern!

I was so excited for my creation and ready to wear it to the event.  So how did I get that colorful pattern for a mask?  I used a L’Occitane shopping bag!  I work in a mall so I thought of stores that would have the most colorful shopping bag and L’Occitane won hands down!  I traced out the mask from the white paper, added a piece of cardboard to the back to make it more sturdy, put some glittered leaves from the 99cent store on the tips and added a straw from Subway as my stick holder.  Total cost of my mask – $1!

I love the vibrant color patterns on this L'Occitane bag, so it was perfect for the mask!

It goes to show that DIY is really fun and you can get very creative!  For other cool patterns, you can use wrapping paper.  No need to use paint and fabric if you don’t have any, just go this route and you will have many options!  I was so glad I did it this way and I think I want to make many more!
